The Baldock Town Twinning Association has honoured a long-standing member, recognising her support and dedication over 20 years.

Shirley Smith was presented with the Honoured Member Award at a recent twinning fundraising event, making her the second person to received the prize.

The reward recognises her considerable contribution, support and interest she has shown to the Twinning Association over the past 20 years.

Most notably, she made her paintings available to the association for the production of calendars and auction lots, which contributed to the fundraising programme and also as gifts to twin towns in Eisenberg and Sanvignes.

Shirley was initially involved with the Baldock Twinning partnership with Eisenberg and then was one of the early members of the partnership with Sanvignes which started in 1996 and led to the signing of the charter in 1997.

Her ability to speak French and German - and also Italian - made her a valued member of the group.

After the initial surprise of receiving the award, Shirley said how pleased she was to receive it and how she enjoys being part of Baldock twinning and now - although unable to travel - she looks forward to seeing her friends from Sanvignes who will again be visiting Baldock at the end of August.

Commenting about today's partnerships with Eisenberg and Sanvignes, chairman Paul Luckett said: "Over the past 31 years many long-standing friendships have been created and meeting our friends from the two towns is always something to look forward to."

Members from Baldock will be visiting Eisenberg in July to continue the tradition and although smaller in number the group is no less enthusiastic.

Baldock Town Twinning Association comprises 40 members and has an active programme of fundraising events throughout the year.

The association is continually looking to attract new - and younger - members.
