A popular Baldock curry house has won an award for having the best curry chef in the East of England.
Chef and owner of Chilli Lounge Abbas Ahmed took home the title of Best Curry Chef in the region at Sunday nights awards, held at Grosvenor House in Mayfair.
The multi award-winning Chilli Lounge chef picked up his latest award at the ceremony hosted by BBC broadcaster Babita Sharma.
Abbas said: “It sure was an amazing night! I am truly honoured to receive this award.
“Looking around I spotted many ex-colleagues as well as peers, and to walk away with this award was a big surprise.
“When I started cooking, I really did not expect to reach these heights, but it just shows that perseverance pays off.
“A big thank you to everyone for their continued support.
“This award, I dedicate to you guys and of course the person that inspired me in the first place, my mum.”
Chilli Lounge was also runner up as the Best Curry Restaurant in the East of England.
This is not the first prestigious award won by the locally-renowned curry house. In 2015, Abbas won Curry Life Magazine’s Chef of the Year award for Hertfordshire, and he went on to represent British curry in India at the Taste of Britain Curry Festival in 2016.
The restaurant in Whitehorse Street was up against others in the East of England, with finalists determined by more than 100,000 votes from members of the public,
A team of judges led by Pat Chapman, the editor and founder of the Cobra Good Curry Guide, toured the country visiting each of the restaurants.
Abbas and his Chilli Lounge team are supporters of local charities in North Herts and have raised money for Garden House Hospice Care and The Hertfordshire Air Ambulance service in the past. They currently hold a charity partnership with POhWER – based in Stevenage.
